Which do you prefer, a sunrise or a sunset? The sunrise will always have my heart. I’m rarely awake for them. And if I am, I’m likely inside my house or walking my dog, going through the motions of my morning. Truly seeing the sunrise is almost always intentional. Therein lies the magic.
I’ve seen the sun rise over the Atlantic and the sun set over the Pacific, and both have their beauty. But there is something about the blue light just before the sun eases over the horizon. The air is chilly and the birds chatter. The sound of the waves is rhythmic and soothing.
This adventure to the sunrise starts with a sunset.
This is the shore of Rye, NH, a beach town that I imagine is quite busy in the summer. But Devin and I were taking a sunset drive down the coast in February, and the town was still.
Our timing was perfect. We pulled over and hopped out of the car just as the rocks were glowing orange and the hazy sky was dimming. I didn’t snap a photo of the sunset itself, but the sun was dipping under the marshland on the other side of the road.
We continued driving after the sun finished its journey and decided to return a few days later to catch the sunrise at the beach.
On Friday morning, cameras in hand and coffee in tow, we made our way in the dark back to Rye.
The blue light, chilly air, and talkative birds were everything I remembered about the sunrise over the ocean. The air was salty. Unlike the evening we were here, that morning was cloudy. Though we couldn’t see the sun, the hazy beach made for some great photos.
I snapped these on my little point and shoot. Devin, as you’ll see, brought his film camera along.
While dragging yourself out of bed well before the sunrise can be a challenge, doing so is always worth it–even if the sun is hidden behind the clouds.
I hope you’re all doing well and enjoying these first signs of Spring! I look forward to getting out with my camera during the next few months and sharing even more adventures.
